Overview

The Dell Inspiron 3505 is a 15.6-inch budget laptop aimed at routine work: documents, web browsing, video streaming, and online classes. In this tested configuration, it combines an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U processor, integrated Radeon Vega 8 graphics, 4 GB of RAM, and a 256 GB SSD. The main value is practical everyday usability at a moderate price point, with a few clear compromises.

Design and Build

The chassis is plastic, but the overall construction feels reasonably solid for the class. The lid is stable, hinges hold the screen firmly, and matte surfaces help reduce visible fingerprints. At 2 kg, it is still portable enough for commuting between home, office, or university.

Display, Audio, and Webcam

The Full HD IPS panel is suitable for indoor daily use, social media, and video playback. Brightness is limited (around 250 nits), so outdoor visibility is weak. Speakers can get surprisingly loud for casual media, though bass is limited, and higher volume may cause noticeable vibration. The 720p webcam is usable for calls but image quality is basic.

Keyboard and Touchpad

You get a full-size keyboard with a numpad and generally comfortable key travel for long typing sessions. Commonly used keys are easy to hit, but arrow keys are compact. There is no keyboard backlight, which reduces comfort in dark rooms. The large touchpad supports multi-touch gestures, though responsiveness is not very fast.

Performance for Everyday Tasks

Ryzen 5 3500U with Vega 8 handles office apps, browser workloads, messaging, and media without major issues. This configuration is not intended for heavy content creation or demanding software. The 4 GB RAM is the biggest limit in multitasking, but the platform allows upgrades up to 16 GB, which can improve daily responsiveness.

Ports, Wireless, and Battery

Wired and legacy connectivity is practical: HDMI, RJ-45, SD card reader, and multiple USB-A ports. The key omission is USB Type-C. Wireless support includes Wi-Fi ac and Bluetooth 4.2. Despite a 42 Wh battery, the laptop shows respectable runtime in light use, with around five hours in web browsing and similar results in video playback.

Verdict

Dell Inspiron 3505 is a sensible low-cost choice for students and office users who need reliable basics, a comfortable keyboard, and acceptable battery life. The tradeoffs are clear: dim display outdoors, only 4 GB RAM in this version, no keyboard backlight, and no USB-C. If your workload is simple and budget is the priority, it remains a practical option.
