Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold Review: A Bold Foldable with Practical Limits

September 09, 2021 By Notebook Center Editorial Team Lenovo
Summary: The ThinkPad X1 Fold introduces a 13.3-inch foldable OLED design with strong build quality, but modest performance, limited ports, and short battery life.

Editor note: This article is an original English adaptation of a Notebook-Center.ru review, rewritten for Notebook Center readers.

Overview

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold Gen 1 is a 13.3-inch foldable device that can work as a large tablet or a compact laptop with its bundled Bluetooth keyboard. It stands out for its unusual form factor, very solid build quality, and quiet operation. At the same time, this configuration focuses on light everyday workloads rather than heavy multitasking or content creation.

Design and Build

Opened flat, the device feels like an oversized tablet. The chassis uses a magnesium alloy lid with a leather cover, and overall build quality is excellent with no obvious flex. The folding panel shows a visible fold line when the screen is off, but the line is less distracting during normal use. At 1 kg, it is heavy for one-hand tablet use over long periods.

Display and Media Experience

The OLED panel offers high contrast and rich color, with full sRGB coverage reported in the source review. The resolution is sharp for this screen size, and touch plus stylus support adds flexibility for notes and sketching. Brightness around 300 nits is acceptable indoors but limited outdoors on a glossy panel. The source also notes PWM dimming, which may bother users sensitive to flicker.

Keyboard, Performance, and Everyday Use

The included Bluetooth keyboard attaches magnetically and is convenient for short sessions, but it is less comfortable for long typing. The touchpad is very small, which limits gesture use. Performance from the Core i5-L16G7, integrated graphics, and 8 GB RAM is sufficient for documents, browsing, communication, and other light office tasks, but not a strong fit for demanding workloads.

Ports, Connectivity, and Battery

Physical connectivity is minimal: two USB Type-C ports and a SIM slot. Wireless support is modern with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1. Battery life in the source testing was modest for a full workday, with roughly 5 hours in web browsing at moderate brightness and around 6 hours for 1080p streaming video. Thermal behavior stayed controlled and fan noise remained low in typical use.

Verdict

The ThinkPad X1 Fold is a premium early-generation foldable that delivers strong build quality, an attractive OLED panel, and a genuinely flexible format. Its main compromise is practicality: limited performance headroom, limited ports, and battery results that may not cover a long unplugged day. It makes most sense for buyers who value innovation and form factor first, and can accept the trade-offs for daily productivity.
